EPW - Non-Magnetic Watch Co, Swiss, mvt and case marked for American retailer C.R. Boas of Harrisburg, PA, 51mm, 14K rose gold OF original case by J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) with initials to rear, gold cuvette, glazed mvt observation cover, white enamel DS dial, fancy hands, SW-SS, lever escapement, 16J, Paillard's patent non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, wolf's tooth winding, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#8312 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.0 dwt (113.5 g). An attractive example featuring Paillard's patent balance assembly which was a palladium alloy designed to be unaffected by magnetic fields. As electrification spread across many industries, the effects of magnetic fields on timekeepers had become apparent, and by the late 1880s and into the 1890s the Non-Magnetic Watch Co. found a good market for watches resistant to the effects of magnetism. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered surface nicks and short fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with scattered hls; excellent hands; case shows ample wear, scattered dings to rear and cuvette, reduced engraving detail; tight bow, crown is missing its jacket (outer layer) and remaining brass core shows medium wear; glass crystal with numerous scratches. Estimate: $4,400 - $5,000 JH-77568
