WW - Patek Phillipe, Genève, PW to WW conversion, manual wind, 35mm x 39mm to lug tips, 16mm wire lug width, original 18K yellow gold hinged back case that has been converted from a pocket watch to a wristwatch, no strap, gold cuvette, white enamel dial with black painted Roman numerals, cylinder escapement, 10J, wolf's tooth winding, gilt mvt, s#5002 to case back and cuvette. Includes original 34mm 18K gold outer PW case w/matching s# for the watch, case features gorgeous enamel work of a cherub on one side and a floral motif on the other. Gross weight of assembled watch and original PW case 27.6 dwt (42.9 g). According to family provenance, the watch was acquired by the consignor's late father in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, in exchange for a house in Transylvania which, as a Jewish man, he was unable to retain in his own name. The watch was subsequently worn by the consignor's mother until the family fled communist Hungary in 1950. As watches could not be taken out of the country at the time, the movement was removed from its original case and converted for use as a wristwatch. The wristwatch was left in Budapest with a trusted relative, while the original case was carried out of Hungary by the consignor's mother, who wore it on a necklace. During a return visit to Budapest in the 1960s, the consignor's father retrieved the wristwatch and brought it out of Hungary, reuniting it with its original case. This unique history accounts for the watch and case being presented in the form seen with the present lot. The watch could be returned to its original case restoring it to its original configuration, or retained as currently constituted, at its next owner's discretion. CONDITION: Mvt: NR, skips when setting, broken mainspring, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered micro-fine scratches, light spotting and toning to plates, light oxide; fine-plus dial with multiple hls to right side, light staining; fine-plus blued hands, some finish loss to minute hand; case shows light wear, few small dents and medium clustered scratches to case back; original PW case with a few chips to the enamel on the cherub side, several medium scratches to the enamel on the floral side, light loss of the blue enamel to both front and back; crown shows medium wear; plastic crystal with scratches throughout, would benefit from polishing or replacement. Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000 JH-80831
