APW - E. Howard & Co, Boston, Series III, 15J, N-S (just over 19S), very heavy 18K gold original "E.H. & Co." HC, gold cuvette with beautiful engine turning detail, white enamel SS dial, KWKS (a key is included with this lot as pictured), gilt mvt, s#7083. Comes as pictured with a 14.5-inch 14K gold chain and with a 13K gold key. Gross weight of assembled watch 99.5 dwt (154.7 g). Gross weight of 14K gold chain 6.8 dwt (10.6 g). Gross weight of 13K gold key 3.3 dwt (5.1 g). Materials tested via XRF analysis. An interesting example which dates from the period immediately after the ending of the American Civil War, as this movement is from a production batch listed in Howard factory records with a date of May 27th, 1865. The movement has balance over center wheel arrangement typical of the earlier portion of Series III production, the uncommon feature of train jeweling in screwed down settings, and a very unusual and distinctive star and stippled pattern engraving to its balance cock which is a charming touch that nicely represents the distinctively idiosyncratic nature of Howard production in this era. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered mild fine to micro-fine scratches, Maltese cross portion of stop-works with evident past sanding; dial with small edge flake at 4:30 which reaches into minute register, seconds-register has been re-secured with some light paste excess visible at its seat and a few infinitesimal pinpoint nicks at its perimeter; excellent hour hand and seconds-hand, fine minute hand with oxide; case front lift spring needs assistance to open lid and is not touching the lid to fully opened position allowing lid to tip back mostly toward closed with gravity, case shows ample wear, prominent deep ding to left shoulder of front, few mild lesser dings elsewhere to front shoulder, mild soft ding at center rear, engine turning detail remains lightly evident around central portions of front and rear but is fully lost through all peripheral areas; bow pivots freely and is thinned at top, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal. Chain shows light wear. Key shows ample wear with indentations and small surface splits at sides. Estimate: $7,600 - $9,000 JH-79022
