APW - Elgin, convertible model, Grade 72, 21J, triple-signed private label marked for Bailey, Banks & Biddle of Philadelphia to mvt, dial and case, 16S, heavy 18K rose gold original J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) case, white glass enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene, s#607101 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 75.5 dwt (117.6 g); gross weight of 18K gold case only without movement, crystal, or crown/stem 34.6 dwt (53.6 g). A beautiful and rare top grade Elgin watch, the total production of the Grade 72 is believed to be approximately 450 made. Beyond this baseline rarity though, we note that we have seen only a handful of examples of the Grade 72 with private label movement signature. This example, with its triple-signed private label markings and with matching movement and case serial numbers, is truly an exceptional rarity. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some pleasant light toning, upper plates with few small micro-fine scratches, pallet bridge and jewel setting with fine scratch striations from sanding, lower plate with some mild spots and abrasions in some areas below balance wheel; nearly flawless dial with small fine scratch below seconds-register, few pinpoint surface nicks at center below hands; excellent hands; case shows little wear, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches to rear, some dents to upper rear with one corresponding very shallow dent to cuvette, nick near center of cuvette, cuvette with long fine scratch from a slipped past opening; tight bow, crown shows medium wear with small ridge break; good glass crystal.
