APW - Elgin, Serial #141, B.W. Raymond, 15J, 18S, coin silver original H.O. & Co. HC with eagle and patriotic shield engraved to front, a previous owner's name scribed inside rear along with possibly part of an address, "National Watch Co." marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), gilt mvt, s#141. An exceptionally early example, Elgin's serial-number sequence began at number 101, making the present watch just the 41st produced by serial number. Considering Elgin's ultimate output of more than 50 million watches, this places the present example within the first one-millionth of the company's total production. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, gilt finish originality open to interpretation as barrel bridge has significantly less "pebbling" of its surface relative to main plate but its tone is consistent, contact scratches and marks on plate surfaces appear to have occurred after gilding, and pebbling does not extend into mvt lettering so the possibilities seem likely either an uneven original finish or a well-executed re-gilt occurring long ago, plates with some scattered small surface spots and fine scratches; dial with some small edge chipping and fractures between 4:30 and 6:30; excellent hands, some scattered areas with oxide and finish loss; case shows light wear, an attractive light patina though with ultra-fine scratch striations throughout front and rear from a past polishing, scattered dings to rear, nick or small ding to upper-right perimeter of front, good engraving detail; tight bow, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500 JH-79964
