APW - Stephen Reed, New York, verge fusee, 57mm, heavy 18K gold OF pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1806, outer case with name "Henry R. DeWitt" engraved to its rear, paper in rear for New York watchmaker Oscar S. Jennings and additional paper for partnership of Jennings and Lander, replacement white enamel dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), verge escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at neck, s#14916. Gross weight of assembled watch 91.5 dwt (142.4 g). An interesting contract watch signed for an early American watchmaker, in the context of early American history, this piece dates during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, the third American president. Although the present watch is presumably of largely, if not fully, English manufacture, we have chosen to present it among the American portion of this auction's offerings due to its primary interest being its early American contract marking. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and surface nicks; dial an evident replacement as mvt pillar plate has been drilled with additional holes to accommodate present dial, dial with very sloppily filled area of loss throughout lower right perimeter, perimeter fracture at 1, edge flake at 6, scratch near 6; excellent hands; outer case shows light wear, no dents, button latch good; inner case shows light wear, dent to lower-right perimeter of rear, dings elsewhere to rear perimeter, evident past repair of pendant junction with solder excess internally and small bit externally; bow pivots freely; domed glass crystal with fine scratches. Estimate: $6,600 - $7,400 JH-80045
