EPW - Bliss & Whittemore, New Orleans, English-made with contract signature to this American firm, lever fusee with compensation curb, 47mm, silver OF case bearing Chester hallmarks for 1832, casemaker's "J L S" in cameo below star, cream colored enamel SS dial, hacking slide under bezel at 7, KWKS (key not included with this lot), lever escapement, bi-metallic compensation curb, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with gilt locking dust-cap, s#7592. A very attractive English import contract watch with scarce Southern state retailer signature, of which one of the firm's principals is also notably a significant figure in chronometer manufacture. The partnership of John Bliss and Edwin Whittemore was short-lived, existing only from 1833 to 1835. Following its dissolution, John Bliss relocated to New York City, where he partnered with Frederick Creighton in the manufacture of chronometers under the name "Bliss & Creighton." This partnership continued until 1853, when it was dissolved and the firm became "John Bliss & Son," with Bliss partnering with his son, John Bliss Jr. Following the death of John Bliss Sr. in 1857, the firm was renamed "John Bliss & Co." and continued to operate successfully for many years thereafter. We have chosen to list the present piece among this auction's chronometery category due to this association. CONDITION: Mvt: NR, chain is missing, balance is gummy, overhaul needed, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, patch of oxide to balance wheel; flawless dial; excellent hands; case shows little wear, an attractive dark patina, no dents, good engine turning and engraving detail; bow pivots freely; clean plastic crystal. Estimate: $400 - $800 JH-77845
