EPW - Charles Gretton, London, verge fusee with rare regulation through dial, 55mm, later silver OF case bearing London hallmarks with date letter partially lost to rub but appearing possibly for 1772, casemaker's marking in cameo with first letter illegible with rub and second letter is "B," case with shuttered winding aperture to rear, white enamel dial with aperture above center for blued regulation disk, KWKS (key not included with this lot), verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with winged putto at neck, birds of prey to table, mvt marked "1716" possibly as date rather than s#. An attractive piece from this eminent maker - Charles Gretton (1647/8 - 1731) was admitted a Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company in 1672 and served as Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1700. Notable apprentices of Gretton included Henry Sully and Joseph Antram. We believe the later hallmarked case of this example to indicate a purpose-made replacement of a lost or damaged original. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some abrasion and scratches to portion of signature's surname, some scattered short scratches and small nicks elsewhere; dial with hl from center to 8, small chipping adjacent release latch slot at 6 and an associated short fracture bordering at right side, few scattered small surface nicks elsewhere; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, an attractive dark patina, few scattered dings, pendant is a brass replacement and pendant junction has solder excess internally and externally; replacement bow is a base metal split ring that pivots freely; domed glass crystal with some fine scratches and small nicks.
