APW - Elgin, B.W. Raymond, World War II era military watch, Grade 581, 22J, 16S, chrome-plated base metal OF original Elgin case with contract markings to rear, black metal GCT (Greenwich Civil Time) 24 hour dial, SW-hack-set with sweep-seconds, fully capped lever escapement, gilt damascene, s#41753565. A good example of this high grade military Elgin. The movement of this example is marked "21 Jewels" but actually has 22 jewels due to the jeweling of its sweep-seconds bridge; this mismarking is the norm for earlier examples of the WWII military B.W. Raymonds as these movements began production intended for the civilian railroad watch market but were repurposed by Elgin with the addition of the sweep seconds feature to fill the pressing military demand, and it wasn't until somewhat later into their production span that the military B.W. Raymond movements were produced with an accurate "22 Jewels" marking. CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start, hacking function not engaging, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered micro-fine scratches, spots of verdigris to balance jewel setting, small spots of oxide to case screw and few tiny spots to smaller winding wheel and regulator; excellent-plus dial with very few faint contact marks; nearly mint hour hand, excellent-minute and sweep hand; case shows little wear, no dents, scattered small to tiny dings and nicks to band, numerous fine to micro-fine scratches, good contract marking detail and rear circular finish remains present; tight bow, crown shows little wear; plastic crystal with some micro-fine scratches. Estimate: $500 - $650 JH-80810
