APW - Illinois, Ariston Rated U.S.A., M.F. & Co. (Marshall Field & Co.), Grade 21J, 14/12S, 14K gold original Ariston OF case with initials to rear, gold cuvette with 1916 presentation engraving, gilt dial, SW-SS, broad transverse band pattern nickel damascene, s#2903112. Gross weight of assembled watch 46.9 dwt (73.0 g). A rare and attractive high grade triple-signed private label. This serial number is listed in the ledger portion of the Meggers/Ehrhardt Illinois book as Grade "589" but we believe this is likely a transcription error in the book for a Grade 509 identification which would be consistent with other examples of this grade which did include Ariston private labels. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, concave portion of larger winding wheel with patch of oxide; dial with some scattered fine scratches, area of discoloration and print loss at lower-right of seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows light wear, scattered dings to rear including prominent dings near 4:30 and 10, ding to rear left of center, reduced engraving detail, rear opening lip and surrounding area with scratches and marring from slipped and rough past openings, cuvette with some scratches and marring tight on perimeter from slipped and rough past openings; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
