APW - Waltham, Wm. Ellery, Civil War era, Model 1857, 7J, 18S, silver original HC with horse's head and eagle hallmarks, name "J. Gray" engraved to front shield, white enamel dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), diamond endstone, gilt mvt, s#56903. This movement is from a production run listed as made in September and October of 1862 per factory records. We have not attempted to trace the identity of "J. Gray" but given the timeline it may be worthwhile for its next owner to investigate the possibility of a match to a Civil War combatant, though the presence of only an initial and short last name might make attribution to any specific individual problematic. CONDITION: Mvt: NR, likely broken mainspring, balance swings freely but with no audible escapement engagement, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered areas of areas of cloudy at portions of perimeter, scattered fine scratches, barrel arbor escutcheon screws are replacements with larger sized heads, case screw is a smaller sized replacement; dial with hl crossing from 7:30 to near 1; fine hands, minute with areas of oxide and finish loss; case bezel does not snap shut, case front opens substantially wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 125 degrees), case shows ample wear, an uneven patina with darker tone to upper portion of front, numerous dents and dings, no engine turning detail remains to rear, only some small traces of engine turning remain lightly evident to front; nickel replacement bow pivots freely, push shows ample wear; ill-fitting glass crystal falls out easily. Estimate: $300 - $450 JH-80915
