APW - Seth Thomas, 23J, Model 5, 18S, brass (originally gold-plated, but no exterior gold-plate remains) OF recase with attractive floral engraving detail, white enamel DS impressed dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, capped third wheel and fourth wheel, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, s#238270. A notably rare watch, per Eric Unselt's Seth Thomas website it is believed that the total production of this 23 jewel Model 5 is only 200 made with all examples found in the 238201 to 238400 serial range. No factory assigned grade number is known for this product but for research purposes it has been designated as "Grade 272" and these are the only 23 jewel Seth Thomas product to have been made. CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly with low balance amplitude, overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and small surface nicks, regulator assembly with some oxide; dial with hl from 4 to 7:30, short secondary branch at 7:30; fine hands with areas of oxide and finish loss; case shows medium wear, dents to rear and cuvette, reduced engraving detail, no gold-plating remains to exterior; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
